Green Gate Organic Farm acknowledge the Wiradjuri people, who are the Traditional Custodians of this Land on which we farm. We recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community and we pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

Resident Guardian Animals

The farming is now erring towards becoming an urban farm with encroaching urban sprawl. This is great as our customers are closer but this has also increased the frequency of urban dog attacks. Not to mention roaming cats harassing our native wildlife. Part of animal husbandry includes practising good guardianship of the animals. Our farm planning includes risk assessments, standard animal husbandry practice and guardianship of our animals.

We utilise Maremmas to guard our chickens from animals of prey like foxes and hawks. These dogs live with the chickens. They deem their fellow chickens as family, utilising its natural protective instinct to protect their family. The Maremma originates from Italy used as a livestock guardian.

The Alpacas are used along with Donkeys to act as live stock guardians for the Damarra sheep. The Alpacas fend off the foxes and the Donkeys protect the sheep from dog attacks. Farmers invariably consider wild dog attacks on their sheep, our main issue is domestic dog attacks.
